Why Should We Sponsor Irish-architecture.com?

Archeire (derived from ARCHitecture EIREann) is the world's biggest website about Irish architecture, an award-winning online "portal" for information, discussions and essays relating to Irish architecture.

The site provides daily updated architectural news, events, and details of architectural competitions. Free email newsletters for the news items and the competitions reach 3,000 and 22,000 subscribers worldwide respectively.

Archeire also contains much historical data, as well as details on contemporary projects. Sections deal with some of the outstanding figures of Irish architecture of the 20th century - Kevin Roche, Eileen Grey and Michael Scott.

With its thriving discussion forums, Archeire is the place on the Internet for those with a query on Irish architecture, and we receive requests daily via email for further information or contact details on Irish practices and buildings. Archeire was also instrumental in the campaign for the reinstatement of Archers Garage by orchestrating an email campaign over the Internet. This was very successful and resulted in several thousand people sending emails to the planning authorities. Archeire also has a standalone site, Archiseek.com, which is an online directory of architecture-related websites from around the world.

Archeire is the most visible and largest website about Irish architecture on the Internet. It currently has around 280,000 page accesses a month, making it one of the most accessed architecture websites on the Internet. We have also forged links with other architectural websites throughout the world by setting up the International Competitions Network to share details of architectural competitions throughout the Internet. This has resulted in Irish architectural competitions getting far more publicity worldwide, as the network has over 30 members (one per member country) including large websites in the USA, the UK, Australia and most European countries.

In an ideal world, we would have an ongoing advertising/marketing budget to promote the website in publications such as the "Irish Architect" or "Architectural Review". However, to date we have had to utilise various other methods of publicity such as our email newsletters. These have proved very successful, allowing us to extend the site's reach and reminding users about events and new features to the site on a regular basis.

Awards: Archeire has won many awards for its content and community, including two Golden Spiders (the Oscars of the Irish Internet world): one in 1997 for Best Non-Commercial site; and one in 2000 for Best Online Community / Special Interest. It has also been a runner up in 1998. In addition to the two Golden Spiders, Archeire has been singled out by many newspapers and journals including Architectural Review, AJ, The Irish Times, the BBC, the New York Times, The Guardian, and Yahoo.com as a Site of the Week. In 2001, Archeire was a runner up in two categories in the prestigious European Content Awards, which was won by the BBC.

Future Developments: We intend to add several major new sections to the site over the coming 12 months, including:

  1. the back catalogue of articles by Shane O'Toole, the Sunday Times architecture correspondent. Agreement has already been reached on this, allowing us to add regular articles - something we have not always been able to do in the past due to budget and time constraints.
  2. Buildings of Ireland: A county by county section of the buildings of Ireland containing photographs and video clips. Recent additions include Kilkenny and Tullamore.
  3. Cinemas of Ireland: We aim to develop a new section on the architecture and design of cinemas throughout Ireland, starting with those in the Dublin area.
