Since the beginning of the century, the Cote d'Azur has been a famous place of sojourn appraisement, particularly for the English [whence La promenade des Anglais de Nice]. The weather is particularly mild and sunny during the winter, very hot during the summer. Eileen first came to Hyère to convalesce after she caught typhoid fever in Spain. Since that time she developed a lifelong passion for the Mediterranean Landscape. The collaboration between Eileen and Jean continued with the decision to build a house together in the French Riviera. She chose and purchased a site at Cap Martin in 1926. The property faces the sea and the Bay of Monaco. The site was formerly a vineyard, oriented south-east, facing the mistral.
By drawing and living on the site for two years supervising construction, Eileen became completely impregnated with the context. Like Valery's architect, Eupalinos, she devoted "like care to all the sensitive points of the building. You would have thought it was his own body he was tending. During the process of construction he scarcely left the works" (Valery, 74). Again we see a kind of body-building. E.1027 draws life from unique conditions of the site, engaging in a critical dialogue with the four elements.
